Potted Panto at Wilton's Music Hall

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Wilton's Music Hall, a gem of Victorian London and one of the oldest surviving music halls in the world, provides the perfect backdrop for the latest production of Potted Panto. Known for its atmospheric charm and storied history, Wilton's adds a unique layer of magic to this madcap show, running from December 4, 2024, to January 4, 2025.

This year’s Potted Panto continues to delight, offering a whirlwind tour of seven classic pantomimes in just over 80 minutes. The alternate cast on our night featured the brilliant Toby Holloway and Matt Tedford who brought boundless energy and sharp comedic timing to the performance. If we hadn't been told that they were the alternate cast, we wouldn't have known. Their knack for improvisation kept the audience in stitches, especially when taking suggestions for what comes next from the children in the audience, and during the updated jokes about Trump and Gregg Wallace, which were met with roars of laughter.

The mashup finale combining Aladdin and A Christmas Carol was a highlight, showcasing the duo's unparalleled creativity. The addition of a hilariously chaotic children’s nativity play further cemented the show’s reputation for blending tradition with anarchic humor. This production, written by Daniel Clarkson, Jefferson Turner, and Richard Hurst, is a testament to the team’s enduring wit and ingenuity.

The cast's ability to ad-lib and engage the audience ensures that no two performances are the same, making each show feel fresh and spontaneous. Costume changes come at a breakneck pace, adding to the visual comedy, while the set cleverly adapts to the mayhem unfolding on stage. The Potted, potted, potted, potted, potted (i may have omitted a potted or two) panto recap at the start of the second act was a masterclass in comic timing. Like most pantos, there are a few risque jokes aimed at the adults, there's but plenty for the children too. The consequences of overdoing the cocktail sausages at the buffet delighted the kids!

Wilton's Music Hall, lovingly restored and committed to sustainability, offers a truly immersive experience. Its rich history as a hub for entertainment since the 19th century enhances the charm of any production staged there. Tickets for Potted Panto are available via Wilton’s website, with prices starting from £15. Be sure to book soon, as this riotously funny show is a selling out quickly!
