GOYA TO IMPRESSIONISM – OSKAR REINHART COLLECTION AT THE COURTAULD GALLERY

Writer's picture: Jeremy SimmondsJeremy Simmonds

14 FEBRUARY – 26 MAY 2025

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Those who frequent The Courtauld Gallery will already be familiar with the gallery’s fine collection of classic impressionist and post-impressionist pieces, incorporating as it does the works of Gauguin, Seurat, Monet and beyond: however, between February and May 2025, this assemblage will be impressively augmented with striking masterpieces from the enviable collection of Swiss collector Oskar Reinhart.

Oil painting of a wave
Gustave Courbet, The Wave, 1870

The exhibition represents the first time that these classic artworks – largely collated by Reinhart in the early part of the twentieth century – will have been seen outside of his hometown of Winterthur, Switzerland. Reinhart indeed became an acquaintance of Samuel Courtauld, the pair meeting in 1932 when Courtauld donated his own collection to the newly-founded institute. Their shared admiration for the works of Cezanne, Van Gogh and Manet is apparent from the new exhibition, however Reinhart’s collection also embraces those who themselves inspired the impressionists, containing stunning pieces by Goya and Courbet.

Painting of semi naked bathers sitting on grass
Paul Cézanne, Bathers, c. 1900

From the gentle focus of Renoir’s portraiture, via Toulouse-Lautrec’s images of French decadence, to the starker terracotta of Gauguin’s landscapes and nudes, the exhibition represents a treasure-trove of turn-of-the-century masterpieces that will enthral the enthusiast as well as providing compelling close-up study for the visitor who simply wishes to learn more about one of the richest periods in European art. A must visit.
